Our morning starts before the sun has fully decided what kind of day it wants to be.
You arrive at the boat ramp, with just the sound of the river and boats being loaded up. Gear is dialed, boats are in the water, and there’s no rush. As your guides get organized and rig up rods, you will pack up gear to send to camp in one of our dry bags. We’ll walk through everything together; whether you’ve been floating with us for years, or this is your first time holding a fly rod. From there we push off, down into the canyon where your day-to-day hustle can disappear for a while with the kind of solitude that is hard to find anywhere else. Whether we are after hungry redband rainbow trout, or chasing anadromous steelhead. We are looking for that moment where everything connects.
The Lower Deschutes has a way of filling a camera roll with its long basalt canyon walls, bighorn sheep, migratory birds, steady moving current, and water that holds fish in all the right places. As we float downriver, you’ll learn how to read water, refine your cast, familiarize yourself with the local entomology, and understand why this river fishes the way it does. There’s no rigid schedule. We stop where it feels right, fish where it makes sense, and adjust to the rhythm of the river. Every day is different.
Midday slows down for a proper lunch.
Time to kick your feet up and join the other boats in the shade with some refreshing beverages. Your guides will set up a nice riverside spot to prepare a fulfilling meal. After you eat we will tidy up our lunch spot and relax in a camp chair on the river bank before heading back out on the water.
We will cover some river miles observing what the canyon has to offer that day as we fish our way to camp. When we arrive at camp your tents will be ready for you. We will supply all the camp gear that can handle any weather we may encounter while maintaining comfort and space. We will help you get acquainted with our chosen site for the night (this is our home away from home). You are free to fish the last of daylight away, or sit and sip a cocktail or hot chocolate and watch the sun set. After you get settled we will serve up appetizers before preparing you a dinner experience you will not soon forget.
When morning comes again we will have hot coffee ready and breakfast on its way.
While you enjoy the morning and get ready for another day of fishing, your guides will have camp broken down and packed up as we send our gear boat down the river to claim the next camp.
By the end of the trip, it should be about more than the fish you caught, missed, or tangled with. It’s about the memories created, the lessons learned, and the time spent on the river. Don’t get me wrong, the fish are important too! Your guides are committed to helping you reach your goals as an angler. We love what we do and we hope to get to share our camping and fishing experiences with you!
